First off - it is pretty cool to have a birthday here on a campus with Chinese friends. I am quite jealous of my June birthday co-workers and that I will miss the royal Chinese treatment while I am back in NY. (Hint, hint my Asian peeps in NY - start preparing to wow me now).
On with the story. We surprised Agnes and Bern for their birthdays last night. The ruse for Agnes was that Kayla was making her famous Shepherd's Pie and would call her when it was ready. For Bern, they made me call pretending I was an idiot and couldn't figure out how to use the gas stove and needed her help.
We had food galore!!!!! This came after only a few hours of overstuffing ourselves with scrumptious Sichuan food for lunch. On the birthday dinner menu were homemade dumplings (yep - we really do make them in the Motherland), chicken wings, long life noodles, pizza, fruit salad, fresh veggies, cherries, chocolate chip cookies, cake and ice cream.
Today at school - the first graders came in at the end of the afternoon and presented Miss Lee with a giant origami heart (now we know why you taught them this in art class :). Watch the attached video.
Of course a birthday isn't a birthday unless you're sung happy birthday in a few different languages - English, Chinese, and a very messed up Korean.
