This will be a completely random entry. This blog is supposed to be about my life in China which I am busy writing a paper about for academic purposes. But due to the philosophical nature, my brain needs a break.
Long story short a cultural conflict between my students resulted in me trying to intervene and calling one an "ass" which was true but I do regret actually letting my thoughts come out of my mouth. Now I am using the situation for a Critical Moment Dialogue to reflect upon how I could have handled it differently to be a more effective interculturalist.
Anyhow...in typical procrastination/distracted mode, I decided to randomly measure the wrist of my left hand by using my right hand to circle around it (making the thumb and middle circle touch). I was surprised by how far down the left arm I could go with my right thumb and middle finger still touching. Have I lost a ton of weight somehow just in my wrists? To see if perhaps this was true, I checked my right wrist. No such luck. I had to move up much further on the right wrist before I could touch middle finger and thumb. To be exact, I have a 1" difference in circumference between the left and right.
I threw this out to the facebook world to see if others have this same oddity. A friend responded that "wearing a watch on the left hand stunts the growth". The problem is I don't wear a watch and may have only worn one for a few months in high school when my grandpa got me VanGoh's "The Starry Night" edition from National Geographic catalog for my birthday. And then a fancy silver chain bracelet watch in college for a few months to look all classy. Being a cellist, I find the watch always got in the way whenever I shifted, so I quit wearing one.
Tangent aside, can using one muscle that much more make a difference? I am right-handed but rarely use my right hand to write (man all these homophones are killing me - right, write). These days 99.99% of my written communication is done with a computer keyboard and to my knowledge I think I use equally the left and right hands. Hmm..this could be an interesting science experiment in the making. Hypothesis: People who spend a great deal of the day on the computer have larger right wrists because the majority of the words in the English language have their letters located on the right side of the keyboard? (I think not - since a,e, s,d, t, and r are not).
Anyhow..once again I digress. I have heard of people having different sized feet. I think I do. I'm pretty sure my right foot is a quarter size smaller than my left. But that is different than something that originally started out the same size and then changed due to use.
Take for example my sister. She had polio as a child and thus has essentially a dead left leg. The right leg is way huger. Because she makes up for the weak leg using her arms a lot more - her arm muscles are massive.
Where am I going with all this? Obviously no where and I just killed another 20 minutes. Back to analyzing my emotional attunement, judgements, embracing ambiguity and whatnot to discern the right action. :)
